Briggs and Stratton Air Compressor Engine Repair
I got another Briggs and Stratton engine at the Stanton Trade days that I was able to use the fuel system from to fix the air compressor. Also, the air compressor engine had seized somehow but I took the head off and was able to get it going by lubricating the piston and valves with PB blaster penetrating oil.

I took two years of small engine repair. First you will need to replace the head gasket, Next get a service manual and find out how much torque the head botls need. For work behind the flywheel, you will need a air wrench a flywheel holder and a clutch removing tool. I believe those engines use points ignition system.

the points are under a cover, that is under the flywheel

When you get through I bet you end up with two good working engines. Is the soil on your property that reddish in color or is it just the way the sun is shining on it.

@chrisstv1979 Or for the non-wealthy a hammer and length of lead pipe.

Everyone is saying to fix the points. I say don’t bother with them. Just leave the flywheel on there and get another electronic magneto. Far less work, and you won’t have to worry about dealing with the points ever again.

The points are behind the flywheel. If you remove the flywheel you will see a small cover. Unscrew it and the points and condenser will be visible. When you put it together again make sure you put the flywheel and pullstarter ratchet on tight. Otherwise it will break the flywheel key.

@captain150 It’s better if you have another electronic magneto lying around, but not if you have to buy one.

cylinder scoring on the wall opposite the flywheel… engine probably overheated. Did the same thing to a Tecumseh lawn mower engine that got to hot. Not much air flow on the back side there.

@Gazpacho8
Are they expensive?

@chrisstv1979 Yeah those Briggs & Stratton engines, especially the older ones, have points. Not for nothing did I spend most of my childhood watching my grandfather repair lawn mowers!

@Gazpacho8 I really didn’t sacrifice anything from the new engine…just put on the intake manifold, carb, fuel tank and front cover. What fixed the old one the most was getting the piston freed up. It will be more difficult to remove the old engine from the pump and also I think one of the setscrews is broken in the drive pulley of the old engine and it is a special large pulley. I will swap in the new engine though if the old one ever quits entirely and put the electronic magneto on it.

i have just taken the flywheel off of mine, it pretty simple. the pull starter assembly is all that keeps the flywheel on.
just take the pull starter off and then slide the flywheel off and the flywheel key, then there will be a little cover over the points which has two small bolts take that off and then just clean the points check for spark and put it all back together again

Yes I would use the magneto ignition regardless. Originality is fine but there comes a time when you realize something is just a huge improvement.

That engine looks like it turns over WAY too easy… I would check the compression.

The points and condenser are under the flywheel. Sometimes you may need a puller to remove it. B & S had completely switched over to the Magnetron ignition coil by the early 80’s. Motor sounds good otherwise.

I see TWO shadows–ol’ Organist lurking in the background?

Is the whole unit very loud?

Nice older B&S. Forget the points, leave the electronic magneto in place, they work better. You may run into one problem. That pump motor has a threaded crankshaft and no keyway.

the points r behindthe flywheel

good vid Chad. Wish i was there to help you. It would nice to visit u.
By chasleo123, April 15, 2010 @ 6:45 pm
the points are right behind the flywheel
By THEtechknight, April 18, 2010 @ 2:40 am
i would just use the new engine with the other engines magnetron. and either scrap or rebuild the old one.

I wish i can find a parts engine with a magnatron for my 1976 Garden King Tiller. My spark plug wire got shredded because the flywheel screen broke. Engine still runs with the wire taped though. Those carbs are pretty cheap, and easier to fix than the mowers.
