This compressor came from a large York Heatpump that I scrapped a few days ago.

Very interesting autopsy! I love finding out the cause of why things fail. I found a very old condensor unit in the woods once, looked like it was part of a vending machine or something, it had a small water pump attatched to it. but I cut open the compressor and there was nothing wrong with it, it worked fine!

could have been one of those cold water dispensors if it had a pump on it?

yeah, it ran for a long time after it broke, lotsa iron and copper dust floating around inside. I guess the dust was so fine it didn’t harm the bearings because everything seemd fine.

I’ll have to find the old shell and try that!

any printed numbers are gone but the stamped ones still show the s/n

what a piss off that one simple little thing can cause all that drama, then again it could be due to poor designing

I’d say it was over-hardening or other problems in the spring metal, I’ve seen automotive suspension springs crack like that and its usually due to metallurgical problems.
