Mitsubishi Electric Rotary Compressor Pump

I decided to tear this pump down and demonstrate it before binning it, I’ve already done a few vids on rotary compressors before but theirs no harm in doing more detailed ones :D Its from a single phase 240V powered 7.1Kw split unit that was scrapped because of a bad compressor motor.(short to earth)

Silent Air Compressors from Fridge Compressors

A few ppl have asked for more info on using a fridge compresssor as an air pump in the past so I thought I’d show y’all my silent compressors to give an idea on how to construct one. The most important thing is a pressure regulator and cut-out switch to ensure the tank dosn;t over pressurize and burst. these compressors can put out a lot of pressure. The Tandem SC15’s that i have as a permanent workshop compressor barely become warm when charging the tank from dead flat to 100 PSI, they are rated at roughly 3/4 HP each and have no trouble seating tire beads, spray painting or running a small sand blaster.

Rotary compressor operating as an air motor

I was thinking about the reason why these rotary compressors have reed valves on the output when theoretically they shouldn’t be needed, and after a quick test with an air compressor, it’s quite apparent why: Without the valve, the high discharge pressure would turn the compressor into a motor, and would spin it up to high speed in reverse, potentially damaging the motor or compressor.

Kirby Reciprocating Commercial Fridge Compressor

This is a 2 cylinder Australian made refrigeration compressor, made by Kirby Manufacturing – Australia. I removed it from a scrap condensing unit used on an IGA supermarket meatcase. This one is similar to a 3 cylinder Kirby compressor that I scrapped 12 months ago, after it ran dry of oil (very little remained in crank case, mixed with melted plastic from the polypropylene splash shield) and subsequently overheated to the point of throwing the no2 con rod, jamming up and burning the motor windings out (no motor protector was fitted)

Panasonic Rotary Compressor – Exploded View

This is an old rotary compressor from a large Panasonic window-box AC unit, I have sliced the housing length ways with a 4″ grinder and slitting wheel and dismantled it as far as i could to show you what it is made up of. One thing that sets these compressors aside from reciprocating (piston) units is that the outer housing is the “high” side of the HVAC system, unlike the reciprocating units where the housing receives the low temp gas from the evaporator and discharges High pressure, High Temperature gas through a tube, straight to the condenser.
