Why does my air compressor not hold air for very long? And why does it lose pressure so fast?

i have a no-name, 5hp, 30gal air compressor that i bought from Kragen. It has never worked as well as a tank that size should. I let it run until it shuts off (once the tank is full), and after that, I have only a really strong supply of air for maybe 5 full minutes before i begin to lose serious pressure. And with no real pressure behind them, my air tools are too weak to do anything worthwhile. I cannot even remove the nuts off of my tires! Oil level is fine, the hose has no leaks that i can see, and the tools are properly maintained and oiled everyday. What am i doing wrong? Is it because I should have done things the right way and bought a Craftsman? …..thanks 4 any help.

What value is there in air compressor tank sizes?

If I bought a 2 gallon air compressor or a 200 gallon air compressor, what is the difference, why is it important?
I understand that the compressor would have to run more often on a smaller tank, but is this a bad thing?

what kind of air compressor do I need to use with my texture gun (Hopper Gun)?

I am new to the drywall biz, I am kind of teaching myself to do it. I have found that I have a talent in it, so I bought some of my own tools and am doing repairs. most of my equipment is borrowed but i decided to buy my own air compressor for my gun. the tank is pretty small but the scfm’s meet the requirements for the gun. So will the gun work properly for the compressor I have?

Air Compressor choosing help for using a framing nailer and other nailers?

I am a weekend do-it-yourselfer looking to buy an air compressor to aid in a project basement finishing of a 12’ x 12’ room. One tool I would like to use is a framing nailer with an air compressor to frame the partition walls. I really don’t want to spend a lot of money on a compressor. I have spoken to a tool manufacturer on their framing nailer and they keep saying they recommend an air compressor with 6 CFM @ 90 PSI. Doesn’t CFM mean the recovery rate of the compressor? If I have 90 PSI coming through the regulator then it should work fine right?

If I have to waiting a few minutes between shooting a half a dozen nails, its no big deal.
Would I be better with a 150 max PSI compressor or one that is 125 max PSI?

Compressor?
Porter Cable 150 max PSI, 6 gallon – 2.6 SCFM @ 90 PSI (0 US, includes brad nailer)
or
Campbell Hausfeld 1.3 H.P. 125 max PSI, 15 gallon – 3.7 SCFM @ 90 PSI (0 US)

Framing nailer?
Grizzly 21 degree round-head model #H7665 (0 US)

Thanks!!!
Aussie, you sound like your giving me advice if I were a new contractor. I will only be using nailers …no wrenchs, grinders, or sprayers. I still consider CFM recovery….Is it not true that CFM is the flow of air into the tank that the compressor motor can produce? If so, CFM is only a term used when the compressor is running….when off, you simply have PSI until it lowers to the point that triggers the compressor on to repressurize the tank at the desinated flow rate (CFM). ……maybe I am wrong, but this seems to be logical. As I stated before, I have no problem waiting after every 1/2 dozen nails for the compressor to catch up. I’d rather do that than pay an arm and leg for one you suggest

3.5 hp, 15 gallon craftsman air compressor problem?

The title says what it is. A pretty common horizontal roll around compressor from sears. Its probably 10 years old if i had to guess. Runs like a champ when you first fill the tank. Once there is pressure on the tank, when it kicks on to refill after useage it bogs down and trips the breaker. If i drain the air outta the tank and turn it on it runs like a champ. I dont understand what would make it bog down with pressure but im also not familiar with the internals of the pump. Thanks ahead of time for your ideas!!

Is My Air Compressor Still Safe To Use?

My grandfather bought an air compressor a couple years before he passed away and barely ever used it. It’s been 7 years since then and I was wondering if it’s still safe to use. I notice just a little rust on the tank near the bottom where the release plug is located but other than that it’s practically new. I looking to purchase a paint gun for it but if it’s not safe then there’s no point. Thanks for any help in this matter.
